What will you be doing as a FLASH Research Expert?
Communicate with internal and external partners (universities, etc.)
  • Discuss FLASH research ideas with partners to figure out if there are opportunities in concretizing them into FLASH research projects.
  • Discuss and support on-going FLASH experiments at the partners’ facility
  • Exchange and report Flash experiment, results and wishes from the partner to the R&D to discuss potential improvement to the partners FLASH experiments.
  • Exchange good practice on FLASH experience with flying team & sites running Ultra-High Dose Rate experiment to improve the prototypes and the preventive maintenance to perform 
Identify problems and limitations and clarify technical risks
  • Identify technical risks once new FLASH research project is suggested by the partner.
  • Explore literature on the subject and clarify project objectives.
  • Have a critical and high-level look on the researchers to highlight potential problems and limits.
  • Perform risk analysis on current prototype and suggest improvement to the R&D team.
  • Participate in the development of the suggested improvement. 
Find global solutions to raise the technical risks of the research project
  • Propose the best technological solutions to reach the project objectives in collaboration with internal and/or external experts.
  • Monitor the system, suggest improvement, and perform preventive maintenance to ensure that the daily clinical operations are not disturbed by the FLASH experiments. 
Identify opportunities for Intellectual Property (IP) protection
  • Identify opportunities for patent take-out, with external stakeholders, Researchers, and patent office.
  • Know existing patents and one's freedom to operate. Contribute to third party’s observation and opposition.
  • Identify new patents opportunities. 
  • Identify opportunities for patent take-out, with external stakeholders, Researchers, and patent office. 
Document the (prototype) handover
  • Discuss and train the site team on the BEAM and PHYSICS of the system.
  • Generate adequate documentation on the FLASH prototype(s) and technical and scientific results to help the site team gain knowledge.
  • Provide answers, advice, and support to site team on the FLASH experiments. 
Manage scientific collaborations and build-up a high-expertise network
  • Contribute to develop IBA reputation and develop own network with contacts of a level of expertise.

    What you need to qualify for the FLASH Research Expert role? 
    • Must have a Master’s degree in Physics. Preferred a PhD in Physics.
    • At least 2 years of beam physics system ownership for a P+ site.
    • Scores at least an Experienced (Level 3) Engineer for Beam on the TCM.
    • Excellent customer communication skills in order to manage customer relationships independent of the Site Manager.
    • Knowledgeable of all customer and IBA dosimetry tools.
    • Knowledgeable of all IBA beam health monitoring equipment.
    • Knowledgeable of Cyclo operations regarding the troubleshooting of healthy beam output.
    • Proven ability to lead troubleshooting efforts regarding beam, i.e. pausing, aborts, electrical noise on beam monitoring equipment, etc. with successful results.
